A few days later, Jaz looked around the Moose Caboose and smiled. The smell of fresh paint lingered, the windows sparkled, bright lights filled the corners, and he could imagine it filled with people. His people. His family and his town.

Including Nia and Malik.

They’d quickly become important to him. So quickly, he felt like his head was spinning.

The memories of the past mess still flashed into the present, but not as often and not as painfully.

Nia and Rayce were convincing him he hadn’t been a complete loser. Self-absorbed and a little dumb, but not a total failure.

It was time to put the incident firmly into the past. He’d learned and changed and grown.

Time to let it go.

Easier said than done, he supposed, but he was going to do his best.

Time to live life for the future, not the past.

And that future looked a lot like Nia.

As if he’d conjured them up, Nia and Malik walked into the Caboose. He moved toward them, pulled like a magnet into their orbit.

He was smiling and had to force himself not to reach down and kiss Nia. They hadn’t said anything to Malik yet about their dating. Or whatever it was they were doing.

So far, all they had were stolen kisses and lonely nights.

He wanted nothing more than to spend hours making love to Nia, but with her son in the picture, he’d take every stolen kiss he could get.

And they had to factor in Burmeister. There was no leaving Malik alone until the guy was caught. So, Jaz would take the kisses, let the anticipation build.

He was pretty sure it wouldn’t kill him.

“Hey there, how did the store and homeschool go today?”

Malik grinned. “I aced the Math test.”

Jaz fist-bumped him. “The comic book trick made it click?”

Malik nodded. “It helps to think of the letter as a thing instead.”

Nia squeezed him into a sidearm hug. “That’s because you worked hard and made it make sense. You didn’t give up.”

Malik rolled his eyes but grinned. His mom’s praise obviously meant a lot to him. They were a strong unit.

Nia smiled. “We’re celebrating. Malik wanted to drop by the Caboose and see the progress. Then we’re going to find a treat.”

Malik nodded. “Is there an ice cream place? We haven’t found one yet.”

Jaz smiled down at Malik. “You do know it’s December, don’t you? Ice cream’s for summer.”

Malik’s eyes widened in fake horror. “Ice cream doesn’t have a season. It’s all year round. It’s ice cream.”

Nia nodded. “I agree.”

Jaz shook his head and checked the time. “I know a place. I can’t guarantee they’re open. Or if they have ice cream, but it’s our best shot.”

Malik’s eyes narrowed. “That sounds kinda sketchy. And weird.”

Jaz laughed. “Not sketchy in the least. But you’ll have to follow me if you want to find out. We can park at home and walk from there.”

He kept smiling even as the word he’d said slammed into his chest.

Home.

He could see it. A home with him and Nia and Malik. Together.

Not a physical place.
